Do you know “reprap”?

Do you know what is “reprap” in the field of 3D printing? Short for Replicating Rapid Prototypers, it allows self-replicating, i.e. allowing the making of components which can be assembled into another DIY 3D printer. If you are into printing your own 3D printer and you are keen to join a like-minded community, check out this informal group, SG-RUG which stands for SG RepRap User Group, initiated by Lim Soon Wei for a group of 3D printer owners who meet up once in a while to catch up on new development on each others’ projects.

20130727_131713Last year, Soon Wei and some members of SG-RUG took part at the Singapore Mini Maker Faire and showcased the “Cube 3D printer” he made. His partner Ian showcased “Rostock”. When asked about the project that he was working on, Soon Wei shared enthusiastically about a tri colour print head that he was working on. While Soon Wei is aware of the Maker Faires overseas, he did not realised that we have one in Singapore until a few months before the last Faire. His group hence took the opportunity to sign up for a booth to showcase some of the printers that they are making, hoping to interest more people in the area of “reprap”.

2014-04-08-22_49_03Soon Wei shared the challenges of juggling work commitment and running meet-ups for the group, which I believed most working individuals will face, but despite that, members do make effort to meet up regularly. Since the Singapore Mini Maker Faire last year, his group has also came together to set up an online shop “Justprint3D”! This year, they would like to showcase their new printer, the Ai3 (Aluminum i3) printer. From the last year’s Faire, he felt that there are more people becoming interested in 3D printers but are not sure how to start. SG-RUG would like to show these people how by introducing them a new design print which is easy to build.

Pan Yew: Light up Marina Bay (Booth, Workshop)

I have always been fascinated with the vibrancy and attractiveness of Marina Bay’s cityscape. This motivated me to embark on creating a mini-LED light display of Marina Bay, so as to showcase and bring out its beauty to be admired by viewers. Many of Singapore’s iconic structures – the Merlion, Singapore Flyer and Esplanade, just to name a few – are located in Marina Bay. They are depicted in this LED light display, and operate in sync with your choice of music!

Cytron: Build your own robot today! (Booth)

Sets of ‘reconfigurable robot kit’ for the visitors to build their own robot using the hardware provided. A instructor will be assigned to help the visitors at each station. Each station can train 1-3 participants at one time. Every slot will take around 30-45 mins.

Jingfeng Liu: A laser performance powered by pcDuino (Booth, Presentation)

We will use OpenCV to capture the profile of a person and then project the profile by laser into the screen. All is done by a single computer called pcDuino.

John Obrien: Web Steered BeerBot and Silenced 3D Printer (Booth)

Steer a home-made remote controlled robot with Beer (or Coke) can grabbing capability over wifi! See what the robot sees using a Raspberry Pi camera! Drive and activate the can grabbing claw over an SSH connection! Ask insightful questions!

Also starring an iPad controlled RepRap Huxley that will be making demo prints from a custom built noise controlled case.

Benjamin Low Teck Hui: The Synesthete’s Music Machine (Booth)

A synesthete is a person who experiences a secondary sensation of sound as colour or colour as sound. “The Synesthete’s Music Machine” is a music-making device that imagines how a synesthete is able to ‘hear’ colours. Coloured objects provide visual cues for a machine that interprets what it sees into the form of sound. The audience interacts with the device by using physical objects to create their own sounds in a fun and experimental way. The machine will be built using open source hardware and software such as Arduino and Processing.

Ong Wei Heng: THE HOMOPOLAR MOTOR (Booth)

The basis of my designs are how homopolar motors works based on Michael Faraday’s Law of Electromagnetism. I am attempting to incorporate the simple motor into a number of attractive items useful for decorative purposes.

How does this motor work:

There are a few neodymium magnets stuck under a normal battery. Magnets have a magnetic field. When there is a current flowing in the copper wire it causes a magnetic field around the wire. When both the magnetic fields interacts with one another the wire experience a force making the wire loop spin. You obtained the magnets from online after much extensive research and tested your motor with scraps of copper that wire given to me by my father.

Why I want to present this project:

How I discovered this motor was out of curiosity. I was searching for how a normal motor work and came across this homopolar motor. So I researched further and realized that it could be made out of simple household items. I gave it a try it’s very beautiful. I also think that it could be incorporated into other household items like home decorations, toys and maybe even on electric cars! I would also like to share this idea with more people through the maker faire, so that they too can build simple yet beautiful things to brighten up their lives. Moreover science is happening in our daily life why not go and explore it and pack even more knowledge.

Using Arduino to improve others’ way of living

Did you notice a group of students showcasing their arduino-related projects at last year’s Singapore Mini Maker Faire?

There was an Android phone-controlled RC Car running around right in front of it and there was an interesting “Home Automation using Smartphone” project.

The same group from the Arduino Club of ITE College East, led by Mr Arthur Pedida, will be participating at this year’s Faire again, but this time, they will be showcasing new hardware electronic projects using Microcontroller such as PIC and Arduino, and different types of “Mobile Robot” which could be controlled using Smartphones and Personal Computers via the Internet.

Experience at Singapore Mini Maker Faire 2013

artMr Pedida shared that it was exciting and eye-opening for his team to meet other Makers showcasing their projects, thus allowing them to broaden their ideas in building new projects. It was also a fun experience for them to interact with other Makers and members of public, especially the challenges that they experienced from planning to construction to testing.

Discussing challenges is something that Mr Pedida has highlighted as sometimes visitors can help the team discover solutions during the process of the sharing. Hence, Mr Pedida felt that this should be encouraged.

Arduino Club

Jannah ITE College East Arduino Club President, Nurul Jannah Bte Mohamed will be leading her club members at their booth, together with Mr Pedida. He shared with us that Jannah is currently a 2 nd year Student of Nitec in Electronics specialized in Mobile Devices and she is actively involved in Arduino as her CCA. She also participated with her group at the “Assistive, Rehabilitative & Therapeutic Technology” competition jointly organised by the Singapore Therapeutic, Assistive and Rehabilitation Technologies Centre and the Centre for Enabled Learning in March this year, receiving a Merit Award for their project. Jannah will be showcasing her project which helps elders with disability to control their appliances without the need of touching any switches.

The above is an introduction from Mr Takasu Masakazu on teamLab (Japan), an ultra-technologists group made up of specialists from various fields (programmers, hardware engineers, user interface engineers, mathematicians, architects, graphic designers, artists, editors, etc).

Designated as “Technical evangelist”, Mr Takasu shared with us his interest in both technology and art in both the eastern and western society. He also shared that at teamLab, it is believed that the Japanese society might still be perceiving the world differently from people from other countries, due to the late influx of western culture influence in Japan after the late Edo period.

Hence, the people at teamLab are interested to examine how different technology are being perceived differently both in and out of Japan, and create works through “experimentation and innovation”, making the borders between science, technology, art and design more ambiguous, making reference to the case of wearable technology, i.e.g Google glass and Necomimi, the brainwave cat ears.

At the Singapore Mini Maker Faire, Mr Takasu will present about Nico-Tech, a Japanese society enthusiastic about technology, and also demonstrate interesting presentation techniques used in Japan. He will also share more on Nico Nico Gakkai Beta which is a “Science Society”.

Watch out for those InVader_Urban Graffiti Bots!

The more I read about our makers this year, the more the excitement builds up. There are so many different types of makers, and it is fascinating to read about their work and the passion that drove them. When I browsed through the blog of “Tech Lab”, I left the site with “graffiti art” and “technology” in my mind. It is something new to me, and I am totally curious to see in person what this thing is all about.

The man behind “Tech Lab”

Rohaimi “Tech” Mohamed, an engineer by profession, is the man behind “Tech Lab”. ‘Tech’ is actually his alias/artist name that he is using in graffiti art practices. Apparently, he has been contributing and practising graffiti art for about 10 years in Singapore! He shared that he is representing STG (SprayTwoGeorge crew).

Rohaimi sees himself as a two-part entity – Passion and Interest.

Art is his passion since young. He loves to draw, doodle, sketch, paint etc. Subsequent to that, he was exposed to graffiti art and started to be part of the graffiti art scene in Singapore.

Engineering, especially electronics and robotics technology, is his interest since he was introduced to them during his ITE days.

He had taken on the artist name “Tech” because he found his passion and interest at about the same time in life.

The fusion

So how did the two things merge? Rohaimi shared that it was a couple of years ago when he started to change his approach to write, paint graffiti art with the help of robots. It led to a series of graffiti-bots building and an evolution of its own.

His projects include interactivity for a friend’s art exhibition, “36Chambers exhibition at Helutrans” which was held recently, “Our Lab by Scape” and “All City Graffiti Art” exhibition. Technology became a tool that helped Rohaimi with his art delivery. The term “tech artist” came to my mind, because he has evolved graffiti art with the help of technology. It is also great to hear that Rohaimi is open to involving himself to other creative art technology and explore how his graffiti art element can be fused in.

The Maker Faire

When asked further, Rohaimi shared that he is a subscriber of the MAKE magazine and hence is familiar with the concept of the Maker Faire outside Singapore. By chance, he was introduced to the local version of the Faire and gamely took up a booth to showcase what he has been actively involved in. Another great showcase, and I certainly look forward to seeing the real thing.

Raspberry Pi: A Demonstration

The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized bare board that operates many of the functions of a PC, featured by RS Components DesignSpark. These days, with society’s ever progressive technology it is almost impossible to see the computer at its bare working basics; however, the Raspberry Pi allows us to take bring technology back about 20 years to its bare essentials. DesignSpark is Amplifying Ideas

Upon speaking with the members of the DesignSpark community, I found the organization to be very dynamic—DesignSpark is dedicated in inspiring engineers to fuel their passion and in turning ideas into realities. In both their booth and workshop, they will demonstrate how their free design tools, such as the DesignSpark PCB and the 3D cad model can help makers turn their conceptual ideas into a concrete design. The tools DesignSpark is presenting will break the barriers in designing and spark new ideas for inspired makers everywhere! Currently, DesignSpark is working on the DesignSpark PCB verion 4, which will be the introduction of industry open source hardware platform to its community members. DesignSpark is certainly enthusiastic about sharing knowledge and creativity to help the maker community of Singapore thrive!
